Hey everyone – just read pages 55-95 for class. Again, do not concern yourselves too much with economic detail and his methods. Pay more attention to his conclusions and his thoughts about life for Dutra and others during this period. Here are several questions to help you out:
Frank talks about three factors that limited the number of slaves that an owner purchased. What are these and how did they work?
How did the introduction of immigrants impact the lives of slaves and freedmen, respectively?
Why did the economy change in 1850?
What were the three reasons that Rio saw such economic growth after 1850?
How did the suppression of the Atlantic slave trade in 1850 affect slaves who were not yet free?
Frank spends a lot of time talking about how wealth, access to wealth, the sophistication of earning and investing money, etc, all were transformed. Without getting bogged down by his methods, try to get a sense of his basic arguments regarding these points.
Dutra was representative of a certain kind of middling wealth holder from his era. After the 1870s, there was a new profile for this social class. What were defining characteristics of the new middling middle-classman and how did they differ from someone like Dutra?
